Control first appeared in a special publication produced by Interview for Art Basel Miami in November 2022.
The tight tracking is directly inspired by Interview's archives, specifically the large-format newsprint issues in the 1970s.

Schwartz first sketched Control in 2017, when he and Berton Hasebe were working on a commission for T, the New York Times Style Magazine. He came back to the project in 2022 for a refresh of Interview magazine, which inspired TNT tracking (based on 1970s headline treatments from the archive) and the Cursive, loosely inspired by the 1982 Letraset face Van Dijk.

New in the Vault: Control, an irreverent interpretation of Walter Käch's sans serif lettering examples with no "correct" version: adjust weight, contrast, apertures, and tracking to your liking, and choose between an oblique and a cursive. Make a politely legible mid-century grotesk or a 70s nightmare…
Control was drawn by Christian Schwartz and Miguel Reyes and first used by Interview magazine (who commissioned the Cursive and the TNT tracking).

Živčić started work on the family in 2017 as part of a design pitch for branding the Dubrovnik and Neretva region in Croatia. Collaborating with Lana Cavar and Narcisa Vukojević, Živčić drew a bold, all-caps typeface honoring the rich cultural and typographic history of the region. Exanding and refining the typeface over the next few years, Živčić was inspired by a wide range of influences to make bold decisions, even when that meant breaking the internal system of the design.
